Grimshaw and Andrew Burges win Sydney Aquatic Centre design contest

Global architecture firm Grimshaw and Australian firm Andrew Burges have won an international competition to design and build a AUS$51m (US$44m, €35m, £28m) park and leisure centre in Sydney.

Over 140 teams submitted entries for the competition, run by the City of Sydney. Chosen from a shortlist of five finalists, Grimshaw and Andrew Burges winning design will be a leisure and fitness complex with ‘something for everyone’.

Expected to open by 2018, the centre and park design will comprise:
A 50m (164ft) heated outdoor pool
A 25m (82ft) pool
A hydrotherapy pool
An indoor leisure pool
A full-size outdoor synthetic multi-purpose sports playing field
A gym and outdoor training circuit
A crèche with indoor and outdoor play areas
An outdoor playground and boardwalk
Plants and landscaping inspired by the area’s indigenous heritage

Gunyama Park and Green Square Aquatic Centre is part of a wider 278 hectare (687 acre) Green Square regeneration project.
